The Emotional Weight of Decluttering is Real

Six months after my mom passed away, I found myself standing in my parents’ home of 40 years. With a big heart attached to the house I grew up in, I quickly realized this can’t stay the same.

Not because anyone wanted to rush grief. Not because the memories weren’t precious. But because the reality was clear — a 2,000+ square foot home was simply too big and too much for my dad to manage on his own… especially as he began showing signs of cognitive decline. The house needed to be simplified for safety, for peace of mind, and for what came next.

And I’ll be honest: it was painful.

Decluttering wasn’t just sorting “stuff.” It was sorting a lifetime. Every drawer had a story. Every closet held reminders. There were moments I felt strong and focused — and moments I felt completely gutted by something as simple as a stack of old cards or a familiar coffee mug.

It was also a lot of work. Physical work — lifting, hauling, packing, donating, cleaning. And mental work — decision after decision after decision, while trying to hold space for grief, responsibility, anger, and love all at once. Some days it felt like I was carrying both the house and my heart.

I’m sharing this because if you’re in a season where you know you need to declutter or downsize — but you feel overwhelmed, emotional, stuck, or even ashamed that it’s hard — I want you to hear this clearly:

You’re not failing. You’re human. And this is heavy.

Sometimes people don’t need another checklist. They need to feel understood. They need someone to say, “Of course this is difficult.” They need extra support, extra patience, and someone who can walk with them step-by-step — not judge them from the finish line.

If that’s where you are, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to do it alone. For more understanding of why the Emotional Weight is Real, read our Blog "Decluttering Isn’t Just Stuff— It’s a Season of Life".
